My Review

A lot of people claim Koopa has "fallen off" or "sold out." If this is true (and it certainly is not) then every living rapper from Houston aside from Z-Ro is out of the running for the crown. Just because an artist put out a song sampling Tom Petty (same thing Pimp C did) or features Twista on a track (same thing Bun B did), this does not mean that they are "whack." In fact, the Mixtape Messiah's ability to call up and collaborate with such heavyweights as Lil' Wayne, Lloyd and Bone Thugs should show just how powerful an artist he is. He rose from the underground and put his hometown on the map with Paul Wall, Lil Flip, Mike Jones and Slim Thug. But now across America, if any of these names are mentioned, all but Cham and Slim will get laughed off, and Slim has never been considered much of a lyrical genius. Even if he fails to put out major releases (whether the problem be with the label or with his own attitude and image problems), he is still respected nationwide, and even internationally. Combine that widespread notoriety with his local fame (the number one selling mixtape in Houston history), and it is impossible to dismiss the power wielded by the Color Changing Lizard. With the sickest punchlines by anybody since Big L ("My car sittin as low as the IQ of kids on short yellow buses, crawlin slow like a crippled handicap kid on crutches"), a mean flow that can fit on any beat and a singing voice as smooth as any other rapper (listen to "All Around the World" from Mixtape Messiah 4 for the best example of all three traits thrown into one song), Chamillionaire is the all-around strongest rapper in Houston history. Scarface may have been more influential, and Pimp C may have been more admired, but only one can be the best, and that is King Koopa.
