Houston Astros Retired Jerseys Baseball Almanac
Dierker was a popular pitcher, joining the team out of high school in the early-60s and tossing a no-hitter in 1976 -- Dierker struck out Willie Mays in the first inning of his very first game as a pitcher for the then Colt 45s. He was also the first Astro pitcher to win 20-games in a season. Upon retirement, he joined the team's ticket office, then moved into the broadcast booth where he shared his tremendous insight on baseball to fans far and wide from 1979 through 1996. He was named manager in 1997, and served in that function through the 2001 season. In his five seasons at the helm, the Astros advanced to the playoffs four times. He won 139 games as a pitcher, and he won 435 games as manager.
