Top 6 Places to Live in Houston

By Melinda Davenport, About.com

Houston is home to some of the lowest priced neighborhoods in the nation. Check out some of the great neighborhoods that make up Houston's inner-loop as part of your relocation research. These are some of the best neighborhoods to live in and around in Houston.

Keep in mind that best doesn't necessarily mean most expensive. You can find reasonable housing in some of the areas.

1. Midtown Houston

Midtown is the closest neighborhood to Downtown Houston without actually living in it. Residents of Midtown are young professionals and empty nesters that choose to do without a daily work commute to and from Houston suburbs. The nightlife, restaurants and MetroRail make Midtown the best Houston residential neighborhood.

2. River Oaks

River Oaks is easily Houston's most prestigious and exclusive neighborhood. This area of town is centrally located, aesthetically breathtaking and has some of the most strict community deed restrictions in Houston. Home prices start near $400,000.

3. Medical Center

The Texas Medical Center is the world's most sophisticated medical institution. As Houston's largest employer, thousands make their home in this area. It is convenient for medical students, Houstonians in the medical field as well as Downtown Houston workers wanting to make a 5 minute commute to and from work.

4. West University Place

West University is in high demand among Houstonians. Homes are hard to come by in this centrally located neighborhood due to its proximity to all of Houston's business districts as well as Rice Village, a contemporary shopping district.

5. Rice Military

This attractive neighborhood is a mix of young professionals seeking to stay within the inner loop and Memorial Park regulars aiming to stay near Houston's scenic areas.

6. The Woodlands

As one of Texas' largest master-planned communities, The Woodlands is located approximately 25 miles north of Downtown Houston along Interstate 45. It features a shopping mall, a regional concert venue, and six outstanding golf courses.
