Labor Day Houston 2012

Out and about Houston this Labor Day

By , About.com Guide

Labor Day is Monday, September 3, 2012. And there's no need for a getaway this year when Houston has so much to offer right here in town. Most Houston attractions won't offer holiday-specific events, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy the long weekend with family and friends both indoors and outdoors.

1. Go Green at Discovery Green

Centrally located downtown, Discovery Green park is quickly becoming a favorite Houston locale. This Labor Day, cool off in the interactive splash pad or take a stroll along Kinder Lake.

2. Go on a Shopping Spree

Galleria

Missed a few items on your back-to-school shopping trips? Visit the Houston Galleria this Labor Day and you’re sure to score big on Labor Day sales throughout the mall. And don’t forget to cool off on the Galleria’s phenomenal ice skating rink.

3. Tour the Museum District

Houston Museum of Natural Science

Houston is home to one of the highest rating museum districts in the country.  And this Labor Day most of them will be open, some with extended hours. The The district includes the Museum of Natural Science, the Children’s Museum, The Holocaust Museum and more. And as an added bonus, they’re all fully air-conditioned.

4. Take a Hike

Whether you choose to hike it by foot or brave your way through on wheels, Houston has quite a few first-rate trails to challenge you this Labor Day. The trails on this list range from beginner to expert and some include hills and ditches. Grab the family and make a day of traversing one of these beautiful courses.

5. Go For a Dip

YMCA Pool

The record high temperature for September in Houston is an unfathomable 108 degrees. While we don’t expect to hit that record this year, based on the average monthly temperatures for Houston we can count on a hot and humid forecast over Labor Day weekend. What better way to cool off than at one of the many Public Swimming Pools in Houston.

6. Stroll the Kemah Boardwalk

Kemah Boardwalk
Since the closing of Six Flags Astroworld, Kemah Boardwalk is now Houston’s nearest and largest amusement/entertainment park. Dine on the gulf coast's finest seafood, seek thrills on a sky-high ferris wheel or take in some live music this Labor Day. And since you've got the extra day, spend the weekend in the Kemah Boardwalk Inn.

7. Visit the Johnson Space Center

Space Center
The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, home of the NASA astronaut corps, is located in Southeast Houston. The center spans 1,620 acres and consists of 100 facilities. Experience a simulation of a zero-gravity environment in the Living in Space exhibit or encounter a virtual rocket launch complete with exhaust at the Blast Off Theater. Not a bad way to spend this Labor Day weekend.
