The University of Houston, located just southeast of Downtown Houston, is one of the world's most culturally diverse institutions for higher learning. The school is perhaps most known for its focus on research. Over 40 research centers gather ground-breaking information on everything from petroleum exploration to community development. UH currently has over 40,000 students enrolled.

Location

University of Houston's main campus is located in southeast Houston along the neighboring streets of Cullen, Wheeler and Elgin. The campus can be accessed via several major highways including the I-45 and TX 288 freeways. U of H is the third-largest university in Texas and located in the fourth largest city in the United States.

History

Founded in 1927, the Houston Independent School District founded Houston Junior College and the Houston College for Negros. Three years later, HJC and HCN graduated to four-year university status and were named University of Houston and Texas Southern University (respectively). Enrollment at that time was 682 students.

Academics

University of Houston offers over 100 majors and minors, over 130 master's and doctoral programs and three professional degree programs which prepare students for careers in law, medicine and education. The school houses 12 academic colleges including the C.T. Bauer College of Business, the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management and the UH Law Center. Many of these colleges are ranked highly when compared to other universities. The Bauer College of Business ranks within the top five per cent of the nations undergraduate business programs.
