WrestleMania, dubbed "The Showcase of the Immortals," is the 25-year-old super event of the World Wrestling Entertainment (formerly World Wrestling Federation). It's a culmination of the year's wrestling events, where grandiose cage matches and countless storylines meet with muscle bound hulksters and unexpected celebrities (Raven Symone, Reba McEntire?). Imagine a deep-fried version of the Superbowl, only with more rabid fans. That's what WrestleMania is, and those that know it, love it.
WrestleMania XXV in Houston:
For the second time, WrestleMania will be held in Houston. This year, the "25th anniversary," promises to be one of the biggest shows of all time. It will be held, along with most of its weeklong supplemental activities, at the Reliant Center. (A lesser man might make a joke about how it'll be nice to seem some kind of Championship activity going on inside Reliant, as the Texans can't seem to even qualify for the NFL playoffs.)
Below is a handy-dandy guide to the weeklong festivities of WrestleMania.
WrestleMania Week Schedule:
Wednesday, April 1, 6-8 p.m.
This is an exhibition and auction of art from wrestling legends and superstars as well as Houston's owned talented artists. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Houston Public Library Foundation. Tickets are $50. Contact Susan Bischoff at the HPLF at 832-393-1450 for more information.
A four-day long event built around WrestleMania, WrestleMania Access is dubbed as the "ultimate fan experience" and will held at Reliant Center. Expect all the typical accoutrement that a WrestleMania event provides. Tickets are $29 for general admission and $49 for a VIP package. Children under 3 are free.
WWE Hall of Fame
Saturday, April 4, 6 p.m.
Stand shoulder to shoulder (read: sit in a seat while they're up on a stage) with WWE Superstars, Divas and Legends as this year's HOF class is inducted. This, I imagine, is just like attending an NFL Hall of Fame induction, except with way more make-up and arm tassels. Tickets are $55. Held at the Toyota Center.
Sunday, April 5, 5:30 p.m.
If the PR release is to be believed, WrestleMania just might be the biggest, most important live sporting event in the history of the universe. All of the WWE superstars will be in attendance, as will noteworthy legends of the sports.
Truth be told, I actually attended a wrestling event when I was a kid and it was insane. If you enjoy professional wrestling, this is your holy grail. Tickets range from $40 to $755, although you're likely to pay scalper fees if you haven't obtained your tickets already. Held at the Reliant Center.
Monday Night Raw
Monday, April 6, 7 p.m.
Catch the aftershock of WrestleMania here at Monday Night Raw, one of WWE's most successful weekly events. This little doozy will be at the Toyota Center, with tickets to be had for $20 to $60.
