Once a year, Houston’s renowned Museum District takes part in Museum District Day, wherein a majority of the District’s museums open their doors for free for a display of “art, science, nature and history.”

Museum District Day Date and Time:
This year’s event will take place on September 12th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Museum District Day Transportation:
Free shuttles will transport people between participating museums.
Museum District Day Parking:
Parking is always a hot commodity in the Museum District, but most every participating location will feature first come first serve parking spots. Free parking is available near Hermann Park, the Houston Zoo, The Rothko Chapel, The Menil Collection, The John C. Freeman Weather Museum and more. Paid parking is available at the Museum of Natural Science, Rice University, the Museum of Fine Arts and more.
Museum District Day Events:
Seventeen museums in Museum District will waive their general admission fee. There will be hands-on activities and performances scattered throughout the day.

The Children’s Museum, Contemporary Arts Houston, Czech Center Museum Houston, Holocaust Museum, Museum of Natural Science and more will all feature their own specific activities.
Museum District Day Special Events:
In addition to the regular museum events that will be going on, there will also be several special events taking place. Those include the opportunity to meet Channel 11 news anchors at the Museum of Natural Science, making mini piñatas and the Lawndale Art Center and a performance from the award-winning world music group D.R.U.M. at the Menil Collection.
Museum District Day Eats:
I recommend packing a lunch to take with you, but if you insist eating on-sight food, there are several options. Café Express in the Museum of Fine Arts is likely the most healthy (and expensive). There is a Kid’s Café in the Children’s Museum that serves typical fast food-type stuff. And there’s a McDonald’s in the Museum of Natural Science.
Lawndale Art Center, The Menil Collection and Rice University Art Gallery will be offering free lemonade, root beer and ice cream and water respectively, but don’t expect those to last long.
