Murder By The Book: Stephen Hunter’s Night of Thunder Book Signing

Stephen Hunter is a New York Times best-selling thriller writer --apparently, that’s a somewhat of a big deal-- so you can expect his book signing/discussion at the award-winning Murder By The Books to be fairly well populated. You can secure a signing line number by purchasing a copy of Night of Thunder in advance.

Begins at 6:30 p.m.

Friday, October 10
Rudyard’s: Hearts of Animals, Orents Stirner, Alkari

Hearts of Animals, the one woman band starring Mlee Marie, is a rock ’em sock ’em bombast of lo-fi cottony guitars and thoroughly enjoyable. Catch her at Rudyard’s this Friday performing with experimental rockers Orents Stirner and punk Southerners Alkari for only $8.

Begins at 8 p.m.
Rudyard's

Saturday, October 11
Westheimer: Westheimer Block Party

An absolute must do. There will be over 100 bands performing, a gaggle of street performers and artists, and, perhaps most importantly, the guy that sells the sausages. Oh, and it’s free too. There’s really no reason not to go. That is, unless you hate sausages, in which case, you’re not invited anyway.

Begins at 12 p.m.
Free Press Houston
300-500 Block of Westheimer

Sunday, October 12
Ensemble Theater: Radio Golf

The last in August Wilson’s ten-play cycle, Radio Golf centers around a Philadelphian trying to attain a position of political power never before held by a black man. That sounds really familiar for some reason.

Begins at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Tickets: $15-35

Monday, October 13
Holocaust Museum Houston: Dr. Seuss Wants You! Exhibit

Turns out that not only was Dr. Seuss a rhyming genius, he happened to be the cartoonist behind more than 400 editorial cartoons concerning war and genocide. Holocaust Museum Houston has these (and others) on display for the bargain price of free.

Etro Lounge: DJ Fredster

Retro haven Etro Lounge has quickly established itself one of the go-to places for scenesters looking to reminisce about The Ramones or the awkward attractiveness of Molly Ringwald or whatever else nonsense was spawned in the '80s. Tuesday nights DJ Fredster offers up his classic audio mash-ups for all to enjoy.

Begins after 7 p.m.

Wednesday, October 15
Houston Museum of Natural Science: Day of the Sugar Skull (family fun)

Dia De Los Muertos, Spanish for “Day of the Dead,” is a Mexican tradition of celebrating loved ones that have passed, and what better way to do that than to make skulls made out of sugar at the Museum of Natural Science? It’s $30 a pop for a parent/child session, with extra ninos ringing up at $15 a ticket, but it’s well worth it. I mean, c’mon, it’s a skull and it’s sugar.

Begins at 5:30 p.m.
