Menil Collection: Face Off art exhibit

Take a gander at some of the museum’s lesser seen permanent pieces that you might have missed, addressing “fundamental issues of likeness, memory, and identity.” Not exactly sure what that means, but it’ll no doubt sound impressive when you tell your co-workers about it on Tuesday.

Downtown: International Festival

This year’s International Festival, which has blossomed into a stellar eight-day-long cultural event, highlights Ireland, which means it will be totally acceptable to get completely blitzed and then start picking fights with everyone.

San Jacinto Battleground: San Jacinto Re-enactment

I’ve never been here, so I can’t speak to the quality event, but I’ve heard it’s a right good time. Their PR people do a good job of building it up, too: Celebrate the battle that won Texas' independence in 1836. This event offers a full day of live music and entertainment, children's activities, living history camps, craft demonstrations, food vendors and much more. In the afternoon, hundreds of historical re-enactors gather at the San Jacinto Battleground to stage the state's largest battle re-enactment. Free to the public. 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Museum of Fine Arts: Rembrandt’s Portrait of a Man, Bust-Length, in a Red Doublet

My fine arts knowledge is limited, at best, but I do know that Rembrandt is big deal, and seeing one of his actual works merits an impressive night out for even the laymenest (I just made that word up) of art aficionados.

The Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club: Open Mic Blues Jam

The blues are arguably the most emotive form of music, and if you’ve got an inkling to perform, head on over to award-winning blues haunt The Big Easy for their weekly open mic night. And remember, they’re not saying “Booooo,” they’re saying “Oooooooh,” on account of your awesomeness on the harmonica, no doubt.
