Guide Review - Angelika Film Center and Cafe
Over the past twelve years, Angelika Films Houston location (the original was founded in New York, of course) has proven itself to be one of the citys preeminent locations for independent and foreign films. The clear draw of Angelika is its mature vibe. With hardwood floors and a crystal chandelier highlighting the small lobby, the theater is understatedly classy in its presentation at least, in as much as a movie theater can be classy. It is typically replete with an older, established, professional crowd and, expectantly, is quieter than most cinemas.
Theres a café attached, allowing patrons the option of eating immediately before or after a movie, but, again, its possessed of an almost neighborhood-eatery vibe contradicting the gaudiness of, say, Edward Cinemas Harlows.
This is an either love it or hate it type of place. If you knew about Slumdog Millionaire before all of the Oscars hubbub, youll enjoy this place. But if youre super-siked about the new Twilight movie or the new Tyler Perry movie, you might be better served hitting up Edwards or AMC.
Note: Mondays are Student Mondays, in which current students get a free popcorn with the purchase a $7.25 ticket. They also feature a Crybaby Matinee every Friday and Saturday at 11:45 a.m. where its acceptable to bring your colicky baby.
